24 Hours in Cambridge

While visiting my family in Boston Kris and I made a side-trip up to Cambridge for a little adult mini-vacation. If you're ever up that way and need a place to stay I highly recommend the Whitman House. It's a B&B in Central Square run by David and Robert and the room fee directly finances the not for profit organization Search For A Cure which is dedicated to ending the epidemic of HIV/AIDS globally. So you get a great room and make a donation all in one. AWESOME!

Anyways, we had a wonderful time, got to visit a few old haunts and rattle the cages of a couple new ones. We had great Indian lunch at India Pavilion, slinked around Harvard Square and played Scrabble (badly - much to the chagrin of an interested onlooker), took in Zombieland at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square after a beer at The Burren, had drinks and nibbles over at Green Street Grille back in Central Square then over to the Cantab Lounge to dance our martinis off to blues music. A quick walk through the drizzly rain and we were back home. Ahhhh...Cambridge love.

The next day I had to take Kris across the Mass Ave. bridge so he could take in the Smoots and of course the vista. It was a chilly and moody, but you get what you get in Boston. We meandered our way down Newbury Street - detoured through Shreve, Crump & Low (sadly, empty handed...) and the Boston Public Library, walked through Boston Common, through downtown via the Freedom Trail so that we could have lunch at Ye Olde Union Oyster House near Faneuil Hall. Man, haddock never tasted so good. We were pooped and chilly but warmed up nicely with some coffee and good cheer. After lunch we walked over to the North End for pastry at Mike's (their quality unfortunately has seen better days) then spent some time perusing our choice of Yankee's Suck-wear and Boston Rules-wear at Quincy Market. And even though my sister is going to kill me, after watching them play the Angels, they actually don't seem to suck as much as a good Red Sox fan might have you believe. That pitcher, Mariano Rivera is a house of pain.

After a great day we finally had to pick up our bags and take the T back to my ma's house. She picked us up in Quincy but Kris had fun saying BRAINTREE the whole way (that's the last stop and the train's name). Oh, my old home. Cambridge will always have a special place in my heart.

What are you going to Mike's for? The Modern -- one block down toward the Kennedy Greenway and across Hanover Street is the THE place to go.

It was great seeing you. We drove home Sunday in a blizzard. Where were you?

It's 65 and sunny in Vermont right now. The trees are spectacular.

I'll go to The Modern the next time. Mike's really did kinda stink and that's hard for me to say about ANY slice of rum cake.

The weather got slushy and flaky later on but since we were inside watching the Patriots and sipping tea we didn't care. Sorry you had to drive back to Vermont in that! That would have sucked.

We are so happy we got to visit with you guys. Thanks for getting us into the museum and showing us a great time. Fuzz loves his monkey too! THANK YOU! : )
