The Monday after we returned from Vermont we all went down to the Cape with my mother and sister. We were given full use of a weathered silver shingled cottage near the ocean by my mothers very generous friend Carol. It was the perfect jumping off point for just about everything we wanted to do. We spent long evenings on the screened in porch enjoying the warm night air, lazy mornings were spent bird watching for woodpeckers, finches and cardinals and our afternoons were spent out and about.
Over the course of the week Kris was able to get in a good bike ride by some abandoned train tracks that ran right through the heart of the Cape, we went kayaking down the Swan river, and even took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for a day of bike riding and sightseeing. Once our barge dropped us off at Oak Bluffs we rented bikes and toured through the historic gingerbread cottage neighborhood and then set off for Vineyard Haven for some more sightseeing and to catch our ferry back.
As for August, he spent his days being adored by Grandma, being carted from town to town for seafood lunches (Kris got to try his first stuffed quahog), and he got to stick his little feet in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. At first he screamed because the water was so cold, but once he acclimated he was all over the new sensations. He loved letting the waves lap at his ankles and seemed to be quite taken with the sparkling water and the feeling of sand between his toes.
On our last day back at my mother's house in North Easton, Massachusetts we had a fun day of leisurely croquet in the backyard and a Father's Day celebration with Kris and August's Grampa Nelson. After packing up our things we got a five hour nap and headed off to the airport exhausted and happy. Our big suitcase sqeaked in at a hefty 49.5 pounds and we were able to avoid extra luggage charges! Woohoo! Back home, we were greeted by 100ยบ temperatures and the sweet hugs of our own beds. A vacation well spent....
